SEASON ENDS IN BID FOR STARDOM!

It’s hard to believe that by the time my regular reader sees this another outdoor bowling season will have ended. How time flies when you’re having fun! Or has the season seemed shorter because of days lost through bad weather and the green flooding? Certainly the weather has played havoc with the plans of our Club Match Secretaries Ronnie Forfar and Hugh Gibson who are to be congratulated for excellent work in difficult circumstances.

With a number of finals still to be played I don’t have my usual long list of members to be congratulated for their bowling success. But I do have some and first on my list is David Lees who saw off a strong late challenge from George O’Reilly (the defending champion) to win the Men’s Senior Championship. Hearty congratulations are also due to Allan Nicholls who won the Geddes Trophy. (Alan features regularly in my lists as a member of pairs, triples or rink team and it’s nice to see him being praised for a solo success.)
Jim Wight (last year’s Men’s Champion) who won the 2-bowl Singles, and
Brian Ronald and George O’Reilly who won the Seniors 4- bowl Pairs.
This has been a reasonably successful season for our representatives in external competitions. Following the Ladies Team’s success in the Edinburgh Top Ten last month I’m delighted to congratulate Anne Blake and Sandra Duguid who along with Carol Hepburn of Currie BC won Currie BC’s Invitation Triples Competition. Not to be outdone by his wife Ron Duguid also featured in an external win when he, David Anderson and skip Ross Young won the Juniper Green Triples Competition. It would have been nice to have added Doris Kergan, Elspeth Oliver, Essie Stoddart and Ruth Vasey and John Miller, Hugh Gibson, Fergie McBeath and Dean McNeill to our list of winners but sadly they just lost out in the Edinburgh Women’s competition and our own Invitation Rink Competition respectively. The latter was once again sponsored by Mark Porteous of Porteous Funeral Services who has been a great support to our Club.

Thanks must also go to Stevie Watson and his team of helpers who so successfully re-organised the Invitation Rink Competition after it had been rained off in July.
And so to something different! A golfing commitment meant I missed out on being a TV star on Friday 7 September when the BBC filmed an item at the Club for their ‘Pramface’ series. (I’m hoping however my picture might appear in another article in this edition with a ‘talking’ horse - unless the editor leaves me on the cutting room floor!)
TTFN!
